Hubert Hubert Koundé is captured hitting a punchbag in the remains of a gym that was burned to the ground. Then there is Vinz Vincent Cassel , who wakes up in bed and is hiding a revolver he has taken from a police officer the night before. At the time, the term a play on the red, white and blue tricolour of the French flag had become one increasingly used by the French media, especially after the Paris riots of , as a shorthand to describe those from les banlieues. It was a not-so-heavily disguised slur against a generation of young, working-class people of colour who were perceived by the white middle-classes as natural born criminals.

However Kassovitz, who started writing La Haine in the aftermath of the events of , determinedly reclaimed the term. The film had turned a negative racial expression into a joyous one. From the very beginning, in its depiction of its central trio, La Haine references famous rebels from cinema past. Marketers have so easily co-opted them over the years, that they have long ceased to be rebels. Rather, they are just modern cowboys — lone rangers who are not symbols of rebellion in any meaningful sense, but instead paragons of self-indulgent individualism.

Taxi Driver's deranged Vietnam war veteran Travis Bickle is a truly alienated misfit who has never been able to be marketed as cool Credit: Alamy. The same is true of the biker anti-heroes of Easy Rider. These pot-smoking hippies have become symbols of rebellion, yet are only rebels in the most anodyne sense of the word, running away from systemic injustice rather than confronting it. Perhaps the ultimate rebel of this time was Taxi Driver's deranged Vietnam war veteran Travis Bickle: a truly alienated character who no marketing team has been able to seem like the epitome of cool. While Field won both the Cannes best actress prize and an Oscar for her performance, the film has been relegated to relative obscurity over the years compared to the likes of Rebel without a Cause and The Wild One, probably because it was so ahead of its time and centred on a woman.

Thankfully, it seems that its time is now: only last month The New Yorker ran an essay by Naomi Fry championing its ongoing relevance. In the s, the US embraced Reagan and corporatism and cinema followed suit, quickly forgetting about the rebellious steps made by New Hollywood and instead travelling in the opposite direction, venerating the puffed-up white male action hero pursuing jingoistic goals. Three years later, Lee then made the ultimate US film of this period about the need for rebellion, Do the Right Thing.

Iconic rebels for the late 20th Century, they became a template for how to depict rebellious characters to a whole new generation of filmmakers around the world. Rewatching the film, what marks Said, Hubert and Vinz out as the purest form of rebels is that they are not attempting to simply escape a system, but rather fundamentally challenge it: they see tackling it head on as their only means of survival. Rebellion was no longer about personal freedom but about overthrowing the power elites. It says much about the impact of this central trio on the cultural imagination that despite depicting a largely masculine world, La Haine has been a recurring model for women filmmakers making movies about female rebels. Far and wide, indeed, La Haine kickstarted a global wave of generational protest cinema. From Fatih Akin's German-set Short Sharp Shock right up to Cannes Jury Prize winner Les Misérables , these combative films have shown the world from the perspective of the racially dispossessed looking to assert themselves. Channelling real anger as they do, these are not films that aim for balance: the characters looking to take down the system are sympathetic, while those seeking to uphold it are invariably corrupt. However, despite this hopeful twist, what writer-director Ladj Ly and his co-screenwriters Giordarno Gederlini and Alexis Manenti show is that the result is depressingly the same. The plot revolves around the officers trying to retrieve filmed footage of a moment of police brutality on camera, which involves them taking the law into their own hands and hunting down a young kid.

What the film powerfully suggests is that a more diverse police force is not a magic bullet, but a more radical overhaul is needed to eradicate systemic injustice. In the same way, the Molotov cocktail landing on planet Earth in La Haine still resonates as a symbolic provocation that the only way to create lasting positive change is to wipe out what has gone before and start again from scratch. And what can be more rebellious that that? La Haine is re-released in selected UK cinemas today. The Redefining Rebellion season runs at the BFI, London throughout September.

The film's opening consists of a montage of news footage depicting severe rioting, sets a very confrontational tone between the system and those who defy it. La Haine tells of just a story. After a teen is brutally beaten by the police, a suburb of Paris finds its self littered with over-turned cars blood, and broken glass of smashed windows and Molotov Cocktails. Three teens Vinz, Hubert, and Saïd , who knew the boy that was beaten now in the hospital find themselves seeking revenge, leave their projects behind and travel to the capital. Vinz, seeks pure revenge in simply killing a police officer in retaliation. Hubert on the other hand believes that murdering a cop in return will do little to help their situation as it will most likely either intensify the rioting and and tension between the police and the residents of the projects or will just land themselves in prison.

Saïd however finds himself struggling with the extremely complicated ethical dilemma at hand and has much less of a defined position. Saïd, contemplating both vinz's and…. Throughout the movie it appears that most of the shots were taken using a hand held camera. For example, anytime that the actors would be running, walking on rough ground or moving in an exaggerated motion the camera would be moving with them. Although the camera would appear steady sometimes, it was still shaking more than it would if a steadicam would have been used. The effect of the hand held camera causes the audience to feel confused and uncomfortable at times.

However, it also causes the scenes to feel more realistic and more engaging with the audience. The use of the hand held…. The conversational form is a self-conscious debate about their roles as fiancés, wives and mothers, as well as their relationships with each other. Critics would notice that the novel projects two compelling arguments: the plot of women corruption and seduction: a parallel plot revolving around the fate of the powerful female circle, bounded by an ideology of "sisterhood" - which makes the story possible in the most concrete way. Many immigrants suffered hardships; the places they lived in were dangerous and full of crime.

They lived in self-contained communities separate from the Americans. These self-contained communities were called slums. In these communities they had the freedom of speaking their own language and were able to follow their own customs. They followed their own religion freely. Pg74 …. An ethnic enclave is a geographic location within an urban setting that is predominantly occupied by a population of individuals of a specific culture, nationality, or ethnicity. The enclave consists of a variety of local businesses that meet the general and specific commercial needs of the community.

According to Alejandro Portes, ethnic enclaves are a product of past generations, who through ethnic solidarity, established diverse businesses that enabled socio-economic mobility within the enclave and outside, within the mainstream economy. Through these enclaves, individuals can economically transition into a new urban environment, without having to rapidly adopt the preexisting culture, language and educational standard of that environment. This is a conflict because it seems as if Katie may blame her mother for the death of her father for making him go out while she stayed at home and took care of Katie.

This causes a lot of tension between Katie and her mother because she also feels as though the death of her father might also be her fault. This is important because after years of not really speaking about him it shows that their mother is just starting to cope with his death. Her mother states…. As labeled, one is the City of God and the other is the City of Man. Individually, they have their own notions and principles, but collectively, they make up the world and its citizens. Throughout the history of French cinema, numerous directors have chosen to set their films with the background of a traditional, nostalgic France, especially when set in the city of Paris.

Films like these, while often successful, are an inaccurate representation of France in its current state…. a bond in common. They are, in essence, united in their cause. Secondly, nonviolent protesting…. For Asians and other minority groups, economic factors appear to be a briefly notable determent of their residential placement. Their dispersement in a wealthy or impoverished area is partially contingent to their income or occupation. Hispanics, Whites, and Asians are all residentially coordinated regardless to their economic standing or occupation.

Therefore, it is not the most effective variable to describe the residential placement of these individual groups. Increasing income among Blacks may have led to higher standards of living and better quality housing but. it hardly led to residential integration. As the film went on it was easier to spot the deep focus or triangle shots, and the allusions to earlier scenes. Welles also used the lighting to portray the characters, their mindsets, and how they change during the course of the film. The development of ghettoes in the United States continues to rise. A major cause for places such as East St. Louis to exist is the growing number of immigrants into the U. The immigrants that live in the slums and ghettoes of America come from third world countries.
